SafeNET is a community
education project of Shasta Women’s Refuge and is endorsed by the Domestic
Violence Coordinating Council of Shasta County. The primary goal of the
SafeNET program is the promotion of healthy relationships. SafeNET is comprised
of two sub-programs, YouthNET and TeenNET.
YouthNET is presently available for 3rd–6th grade students. Through interactive
workshops facilitators address bullying issues and seek to equip youngsters
with assertive communications skills and healthy problem-solving
strategies. Over three workshops students examine the dynamics of the
bully/victim/bystander relationship, identifying the attitudes and actions that
serve to perpetuate the problem. Through role-play activities, students
learn to use positive role modeling by supporting victims and responding
assertively to bullying behavior.
TeenNET
is designed for 7th-12th grade students and seeks to
educate teens in communication skills, self-reflection, and personal
responsibility. Students are challenged to question attitudes that accept
violence and/or blame victims. The TeenNet program has workshops that include:
Dating/Domestic Violence
Sexual Assault (stranger, acquaintance, and date)
Sexual Harassment and other forms of school
violence
Specific workshops designed and
offered upon request
Each
student workshop includes a topic introduction followed by a guided group
discussion. Workshops are designed to fit a 50-minute class period and are
usually two or three days in a row; however, they can be tailored to meet the needs of a particular group or
classroom.
SafeNet
staff also facilitates FREE teen
activities throughout the year, in a safe, violence-free and drug-free
environment. These activities include band nights, creative writing nights, discussion
groups, classes, pizza parties, movie nights, basketball tournaments, and much
more.
