Dating or Domestic Violence is ANY abuse between two people who are or who were in an intimate relationship.

Abuse can be physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, financial, intimidating, or the threat of any of these. See the Power and Control wheel here.

Physical abuse DOES NOT have to leave a mark to be considered abuse, some examples are:

  • Scratching
  • Choking
  • Punching
  • Pushing or shoving
  • Kicking
  • Using a weapon
  • Throwing things at you
  • Slapping
  • Pulling hair
  • Physically restraining you

Sexual Abuse is any abuse of a sexual nature. This means it can be physical, but does not necessarily have to be. It includes:

  • Rape, even if the couple is married
  • Unwanted touching, kissing, or sexual activity of any kind
  • Forcing or pressuring you to go further than you’d want (even if you’ve had sex before)
  • Not allowing you to use birth control, or forcing you to terminate a pregnancy
  • Taking pictures or videos without your permission, or using these pictures to harm you (putting them on the internet, texting them to friends)

Verbal/Emotional Abuse is anything that the abuser says or does that causes you to be afraid, lowers your self-esteem, or manipulates or controls your feelings or behavior. It includes:

    • Name calling and put downs
    • Yelling and screaming
    • Intentionally embarrassing you
    • Isolating you from friends and family
    • Controlling you, telling you what to do
    • Threats to harm you, those you love, or themselves
    • Harassing you via text, online, or calling you excessively
    • Making you feel responsible for the abuse
